Letters to the Losts ~ Brigid Kemmerer ✩ Review
Good morning !
After taking my much needed “break” of english reading with one of my french book to cleanse my brain, I decided to loan this one from the library; however this time using the “Libby” app.
Sophie’s post was the one to make me wanna read this book, so I added it to my virtual wanna read and surprisingly, while I was aimlessly looking at the book selection my library had on the app, not looking for anything particular – this book came to view. I decided to read and excerpt to see if that was what I wanted to read at the time being, and it was !
5 / 5 stars
Trigger warning; attempted suicide, suicide idealizations, grief
I absolutely falled in love with this book ! The characters are so nicely made and raw; we can clearly see them going through their grief and feel them hurting. It also includes my most favorite form of writting; emails exchanges !!
For some reason, this book gives me some “Perfect Chemistery” by Simone Elkeles and “Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac” by Gabriel Zevin feels — Having the relationship between the “bad” boy and the sweet girl from the first, and the photography love from the second. Having loved both of them, it’s a great mix for me !
The way our two main characters act around each other, not knowing it’s the person they’ve been exchanging emails and notes with breaks my heart.. I wonder how they’ll react upon finding out, and surely hope it won’t stop because of that !
This is the kind of book that makes me fall for the characters, hard. They are both grieving, but Juliet’s also been having panic attacks through the novel. I cannot get myself to stop reading, although it’s midnight and I wake at 5:45am the next day- I just NEED to read more of them. And when I do leave the book, it leaves me feeling like I must do something; write an emotional letter to my own “The Dark” myself, pour my heart out, something! The story hooked me right from the beginning, and I can’t let it go.
The last parts of the book/ending got me so emotional I was sobbing like a baby alone in my bed at 2am, Oh my god this book! The little life lessons within it are so powerful, I DEFINATELY need to buy a copy of this book and re-read it forever. I need more of Juliet and Declan.
Oooh, I got this one a couple of weeks ago. I’m excited to read it!!
Hopefully you’ll like it as much as I did ! ❤️
Yay glad you loved it! I think the entire book got lost in translation, because I read SO many positive reviews about the original book and SO many negative ones about the Dutch translation. And yes, I was one of them. I really disliked it and the rest of bookclub did too. I ended up rating it 1 star. To be honest, it’s such a pity when meanings of books get lost in translation.
Oh wow! The total opposite happened to me, I really enjoyed my french translated copy and yet most of the original english’s review was bad.. it can really go either way.
