All about (my) dachshunds ! 🐶

Sundays are for relaxing, am I right ? well.. maybe cleaning & homework if you work 5days a week but eh, let’s not talk about thoses..  So I debcided to have a new category of pictures on  my blog where I can go on about anything I want that’s not book related ! 🙂 I will include some facts/anecdotes/random did you knew ? things and basically watever I wanna share about that.

If you didn’t knew already, or havent paid enough attention on my blog name recently – I am indeed a “crazy dachshunds lady” 😂 I wanna get ALL THINGS DACHSHUNDS and have like a million of them … And of course i’ll include pictures of my two, who doesn’t like pretty pups, eh ??!

** Warning; Of course I can only really talk about my two and what I have seen upon my researchs of my breed. My two don’t have an ounce of aggressivity, and are used to snuggling face to face with me. Pleace keep in mind all dogs are different and to socialize them properly / make sure they know you are the leader of the pack, and understand and pay close attention to their body languages. **

So, without further ado, here we are !

¤ Dachshunds have three (3) different kind of sizes & type of coats. Miniature, “tweenies” & standards for size; and smooth, long and wire for type of coats.  Miniatures can go up to 11pounds, while standard size is between 16 & 32 pounds. The tweenies is the size in between. Even if it’s technicly the same breed, one cannot crossbreed between sizes nor different type of coats; that still makes a mutt and is frown up on.

¤ The longevity of that kind of dogs is of 16 years +. However, because of the shape of their long spine, they are prone to what we call “IVDD” – which is sometimes hereditary, or mostly seen in obese dogs. Hence why it’s very important to monitor thoses wieners to not eat too much and be fat, as it puts too much stress on their long back & is not properly “supported” like a normal kind of dog would. I included a link for Crusoe’s explanation post, but in short IVDD happens when the disks are squeezed or busted – surgery can be done, and if paralizing happens and cannot be saved, little weelchairs can keep our pups happy ..

Baby Kafei ; He had 2-3 months on this

¤ Dachshunds prefer to be among other of their own breed, you want to introduce them young if you have another race aswell. They also like to be with another dachshund (or other dog, see up.) as they adore to “puppy pile” and snuggles

puppy piling. sadly don’t have a picture where you clearly see one on top of the other x)

¤ I cannot say it enough .. they can be a pain of stubborness. To be a dachshund parent, you need to be more stubborn than them xd (or let them win at times… they sure are cute..) and are known to be the hardest breed to potty train. Thoses cuties need patience and positive enforcement rather than punishment; also known to not go potty outside if it’s raining.

¤ Once you have one, it’s game over; you will get fondly in love with them ! yeeah i know, there’s some people who won’t be a good match for them but eeeeh – not in my house ..  Thoses dogs are loyal to the core and show how appreciative they are all the time ! it’s so adorable.. I’d buy them something / wash them / etc. and they’d come and lick me as a way to say Thank you !

* more of a “one person” kind of dog, however. There can only be one master or momma. *

Moooom.. ! let us in !

¤ Dachunds literally means “badger dog” and are from Germany. Their long back was “made” for fitting into badger’s/rabit’s & foxes’ den and was mainly used for hunting once upon a time; however they grew in popularity in being a family dog – be careful if you have young kids, as some individuals aren’t quite fond of them. Again, they the need proper socialization & education. Mine works fine with and adores my friend’s toddler we babysit some times, as they felt him move in my friend’s belly as she was pregnant. Apparently females are better hunters than males xD from what my grandmother’s boyfriend said from his own experiences.

¤ Their puppies are often mistaken to be basset hounds (or bloodhounds), as per their long ears and floppy “extra” skins. How many times have I been asked if I had a “hush puppies” 😂

¤ related to the last one, being a dachshund owner, you get used to be screamed at: « OMG! a wiener dog! » when out or walking them and being asked ALOT if they could pet / give them a treat. Some less friendly just go and pet them without asking; which is NOT safe in any way. As a general reminder, always ask and pay attention to the dog body language when you do not personnally know them 👍

Let me give you a last one for the road; this totally unplanned christmassy one !

¤ Be warned; the little fellas actually think they are the size of a doberman… and have the sound of their barks ! Which yes, they bark an awful lot. Upon first hearing them, if you don’t see the dog making the sound .. you could be very surprised ! Big and powerful bark for such a small mouth ..

¤ Most dachshunds are maniacs of blankets. They won’t hesitate to steal them & burrow inside ! Your bed just cannot stay done ahah, and if you want one to snuggle with you, it’s pretty simple: get a blanket ! One will pop right on you. 😂

¤ The breed is sadly prone to get tartar build up and dental problems; so you need to pay closer attention to thoses teeth and ideally brush them often. Some “dental treats” given every day also helps, aswell as bone toys for them to chew on, I find. [article on 3 simple ways to do so]

¤ You also wanna be careful of that long back – because as stated more up of this post, they are most likely to get IVDD than other breeds (although mom’s old poodle had it, 15 years ago). So you wanna be more gentle with them: make sure you hold them properly to support their backs, keep them from jumping as much as you can – they’re still dogs, and stubborn at that so sometimes.. it’s sadly impossible, and etc.

¤ You can never do enough research ! Wether it’s on our breed or for their general health/tips. I absolutely love that and am always willing to read articles on that; such as reading “Canadian dogs” magazine or blog !

Aand I think this shall be enough for this post ! 😊 I had a lot of fun making this one, so I hope you’d had fun reading me blabble about my lovely breed, which I adore with all my heart, as much as I had fun writting them!

Let me know if you have or want to have dachshunds, aswell as what you would like me to blabble about for the next time !

P.S: if you are curious – my two are standard sized, black dapple smooth dachshunds ! I got them both from the same breeder (yes, I know, please do not comment on my choice..) they have the same parents, but aren’t from the same litter. My little male is going to be 4 years old in March, while his sister will be 3 years old in May. respectively named Kafei and Sheik based off Legend of Zelda characters. Both of them are neutered & spayed 🙂

    1. Thank you ☺ I am in love with this breed in particular, hahah

I so would had wanted to be a vet, or atleast a vet tech aswell ! however, im not sure I have enough math and/or chemistry to my record .. I LOVED biology, but chemistery ..that was a different story :/ and about university, we only has it in english in a private college – if I wanna do french I need to move elsewhere (which.. probly couldn’t have my two). hand in hand just the private way would cost about the same.. 😓
I wish you the best with either, or both of thoses carreer ! <3

    1. I used to saw me as a cat lady aswell, until I got a sausage heheh sadly, my old kitty passed and havent got the change to get another 😔 dad’s allergic and my youngest haven’t really saw a cat before … so heh, could be a not so great thing for that cat ..

  1. Soooo adorable! I didn’t realize dachshunds needed all this! Thank you for sharing this with us. I can’t imagine how much more difficult potty training this breed must be, I already had a quite a time with our young ones hahaha do make this a Sunday thing, Kristina! It’s such a lovely post <3

    1. heheheh Thank you ! <3 Luckily for me, my two was breeded on a farm – so I got them half trained. I had way less problems with potty training than a lot of my friends did ..
it's always a pleasure for me to talk about my breed ! hahaha

  2. I have 2 long haired dachshunds! Toby is brown haired male and Scarly is black and tan doxie.. They are 10 and 11 years old. You are definitely right about them being stubborn and blanket hogs! They are my babies too!

  3. Great points. I have a 16 month old mini dachshund and he is impossible to house break! He never has an accident in my apartment but as soon as we bring him somewhere else he pees on the floor. Always. Oh, well. He’s so darn cute.

    1. Ohhh no.. ive been SO lucky they were trained already as the breeder had a farm; though its impossible to get them out in the rain 🙈 so it does have accidents once in a while but eh..

My male also like to pee on stuff to mark his territories it seems 😐 which he’s been neutered since a few months old so .. idk whats going on xd
