Book hangovers; A good thing??

Book hangover; A state where the reader is still hooked to previous finished book (world, characters, etc.). The reader cannot “cope” with said book ending and it may feel like torture to not have more to read from said book.

Sounds harsh, eh ? Have you ever got thoses before ?

so why in the world would it be a good thing ?!

Well – bear with me, and I shall explain to you !

You see, i’m a bit of a sadic I think- ahah. The way I see this, the more I like the book, the more i’ll get prone to that hangover. If I don’t, this book will definately NOT be a 5stars read in my head.

I like books who can make me feel things; who will make me bawl my eyes out .. and when I finish said book, I wanna be homesick and feel the need to crawl back in. That’s maybe due to the fact that I just LOVE re-reading .. so maybe im odd here, hah.

I feel like, If an author could create a bookish hangover on me; it surely the book made it’s way to my heart and had a sort of impact on me. I wanna scream about said book for a while and not just feel nothing and read book after book like nothing happened … that’s just now how I want it. Just like if I read something that don’t trigger my imagination, im surely not gonna keep reading ! It’s just not fun you know ..

Does it makes sense ?? Anyone else feels they love having book hangovers ?
for the same reasons or am I missing something?

  1. I am the exact same way! I use book hangovers to gage if I actually liked a book or not, because 99% of the time the books that have stuck with me throughout the years are the ones that I have had a bookish hangover from! I like to think of the hangover as a hook and I’m the fish–if the book is really good and hooks me when I’m done reading it, I know that it left an impact on me because it wont let go until it is ready too (I have absolutely no clue if that made any sort of sense).

  2. I’m with youuu! Book hangovers are what tells me if a book is truly 5 staars, that need to go back to a world and never get out is something that not any author can cause in a reader!

  3. Haa… so true… I hate when I’m going through it because I can’t pick up another book, but it’s also fun remaining in the Same wonderful world… I read a lot of fanfiction the last time I was in a book hangover… seemed like the best kind of fix 😊😊

    1. I have a book of short stories-ish so that will do the trick ! I’m not someone who jumps directly into another anyway … I usually only start the next one the day after,

      1. I would love to jump from one to another immediately… unless I decide to mull over my thoughts and write down something 😊

  4. I don’t think i ever had it!
I have read some awesome books, and i did think about them after i finished them, but it wasn’t bad or torturous 😀

    Guess i’m lucky?

  5. Yes it does make sense. Many of my readers had a similar effect. Its a nice feeling as an author at times when people can so easily relate with your book.

  6. This makes A LOT of sense, actually. I’m always looking forward, almost, to have that “book hangover”, just that feeling that a book destroyed my feels, made me completely fall in love with everything, the world, the characters, everything. I love books like that, they’re the ones that make me love reading so, so much, so in a way, having a book hangover can be a good sign, only means we loved the book so much 😀

    1. Thank you !
yeep, I do that too heheh.. that’s how you know for sure you’d like to reread that one. Which is what I actually aim for. a good book is good but… not as amazing

  7. I always hear readers talking about hangovers but I don’t think I’ve ever really had that issue? Or maybe I just don’t understand haha.

I get reading slumps, but I’ve never really attributed it to a particular book. I do get hangovers review-wise though. A lot of fantastic books I just REALLY struggle to find the motivation to write a review that shows the world how great it was.

    1. Aah ! well, that can be a form of it.

It’s mostly like a reading slump, per say, but not because you dont wanna read; but you only want THAT book you just finished and nothing else. Wanna stay in that world/characters and just … live there inside with them.

  8. I love getting book hangovers, it just proves how good the book you’ve just read!! It’s amazing how much feels we get by reading words on paper and all these feels is what makes reading so much fun. Even though sometimes we are left almost dead when we finish a good book haha.

    1. Totally agree !
In fact, if my imagination cannot be stired while reading… imma have to dnf. what’s more boring than staring at words on a page – I wanna get swept off my feet, I wanna get my feelings played with.. !

  9. Hahaha love hard and die hard LOL yes and the worst book hangover i’ve experienced was reading Forbidden by Tabitha Suzuma. Still not recovered years after!

  10. I think my last hangover was Middlemarch. I missed the characters and couldn’t seem to focus on other books I started. They didn’t really wrap me up in the people, places and emotions like Middlemarch did. I like books hangovers personally but sometimes they can put you in a slump because sometimes nothing else reaches that euphoria of the book that caused the hangover. Happily however I’ve recovered and look forward to some of my upcoming books
