Let’s talk Bookish ➙ Do you read more characters your age?

Heey friends!

Today we have November 15th’s prompt, about our preffered MC ages ; Do you prefer reading about characters your age? Or do you not mind? As you get older, do the protagonists you’re drawn to get older as well? Do you feel you can connect more with characters closer in age?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a bookish meme that was created by Rukky @ Eternity books where each Friday, bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week! Since the beginning of April, the meme has been taken over by Aria @ Book Nook Bits; She also created the pretty new graphics!

I can’t say it’s something that bothers me too much; although i’m turning 30 in December, I still read a good part of YA. At times it feels like my brain stopped aging my 24, so I can still relate to teenagers/college years MCs. On the other hand, sometimes it can be harder for me to relate to more adult MCs because of things I spoke about in my fear of the 30s post.

I don’t read enough middle grade, although I should- as it’s much more easy on my brain and help me to keep reading in time of overworking myself.

As for nonfictions, the age of the MC feels irrelevant as I read more of medical and true crime nonfictions – where either we tell multiple true crime stories, or something is explained to us – my last nonfiction had been people expressing their experiences on asexuality for exemple.

What about you? does the age of the MC matter?

  1. I’m 31 and I still read YA too, so the age of the MC doesn’t bother me. The only thing that bothers me is when they’re really immature even though they’re about to head off to college. Also, sometimes I can’t relate at all to MCs my age, but it doesn’t mean that I won’t enjoy the book.

    1. Yes that’s true too! Some people take longer to mature than others aswell 😅 In a book that ive read, her 10yo sister was acting like someone who’s like 8- I was really taken aback by that 🫢

  2. I also still read a lot of YA even though I’m in my 30s. I’d love more books about characters my age and older, but there’s just not a ton of them in the genres I read, it seems. I don’t really pay attention to age when I’m picking books though, as long as the story sounds good!
