Let’s talk “Smut” genre 🤭

First, taking off this post with a confession .. I’ve never read a smut/erotica book ever, so far. Sure, I’ve read a contemporary here and there that had one or two sex scene in it – but nothing too too major that would make me qualify it as such.

I’ve seen few readers saying they either love them or hate them – and that genre has me curious. Thus this conversation post! 😁

Cheesy contemporary romance are one of my favorite, no matter if it’s YA or NA. One of my absolute favorite i’m always raving about is “Sweet Thing” by Renée Carlino; which yes, I recall it had one masturbation scene and maybe one or two sex scene?

So really.. I have no idea why I never tried to “jump the fence” yet 😂 Not that reading anything like that really bother me, so I guess I just didn’t got one to appear on my radar yet.

✧ What would you consider as Smut/Erotica?
For me i’d consider maybe 1 or 3 sex scenes total as a romance book still, as it’s not a whole lot; but if you have one after another, then it’s pretty clear it’s erotica.

✧  What is your personal opinion on them? Do you love or hate them – or rather don’t have an opinion?

✧  Which book is one of your favorite? Which one would you recommend for a “newcomer” into that genre?

✧ Just because i’m curious … What was your first read of that genre? What had you picking up that book ?

✧ If you read them, do you review thoses books aswell or is it more like your secret “guilty pleasures” ?

  1. The first and probably still the best that I’ve read was Anne Rice’s Beauty Trilogy a retelling of Sleeping Beauty and I’ve read 50 Shades.

I probably read a couple more here and there I don’t have anything against the books per say and they can be fun but to be honest after the first in the Sleeping Beauty series I can’t think of one where I’d say it was a well-written book. To each their own though 🙂

    1. Well see, writting is something I cant say wether it’s good or bad, so xD
I gotta check that serie out !

  2. I’ve read some erotica books before (most of it, I didn’t know was erotica), but it’s irritating to read for me because I am not a fan of sex scenes in a story. Maybe it’s okay if there are only one or two sex scenes, but if every chapter it has one, then I’ll immediately skim past it to get to the end of the story.

  3. I consider smut, to be stories that have lots of sex with feelings behind them. Like the people involved in the sex scenes to be in a relationship (or something of the sorts. Maybe even friends-with-benefits). I consider erotica to be stories that are sex-fuelled, and that sex is the main goal in the story.

I myself have read erotica, and even “taboo” stories in the past. In terms of speaking of “smut” I’m a-okay with the Smut genre, it doesn’t bother me in the least.

I don’t know what I would recommend for a smut-newcomer 😂😅. Lately I’ve actually been reading stories that feature “reverse harem’s” which means that there’s one lady, and 2-3-or more guys. And there’s always a relationship involved. But I figure that reverse harem stories would be too heavy for someone who hasn’t really read smut before. —-I’m going to go out on a limb though, and recommend that maybe you start with ‘Black Silk’ by Jan Gordon. If I’m remembering correctly, Black Silk is a bit of both smut and erotica, with a paranormal twist on things.

My first read of the smut-genre… I don’t actually remember what it was, since I started reading them about 10 years ago. But I started reading them purely because I was curious.

Truthfully, I actually only started reviewing the smutty books that I’ve read this year. There are even some smut/erotica books that I won’t talk about on my blog just because I didn’t enjoy them at all.

    1. Ah ! I see what you mean – make sense. I haven’t read any « taboo » stories, but erhhh… let’s say it’s not quite my cup of tea.

Oh wow! I’ll go peak at that one, then! Yeah.. ithink it’s the kind of genre that would allow not reviewing them the most xD like- how do you explain not liking a book like that, specially if it’s purely because of the sex part ..

  4. I love smut as long as it’s well written and won’t take the whole plot. If a book is 90% of smut– it’s not for me. I need some other content besides the lemons. This year I’ve been more of a mood for smut than for YA books.

I’d recommend Alexa Riley books since they always write smut alpha males and curvy heroines. Some of my favorite smut series are Ice Planet Barbarians by Ruby Dixon (I wouldn’t suggest starting with these because aliens’ anatomy is different it could freak you out :D), Crossfire by Sylvia Day. I’d also 100% suggest you read Dark In You by Suzanne Wright. Besides smut this series has demons and mystery. What more could you want? 😉

I think my first smutty books I read were Immortals After Dark by Kresley Cole and Fifty Shades of Grey by E.L James. But I read smutty fanfiction before these books. I’m not sure what made me pick those books. I have always loved paranormal being so I think that made me pick up Immortals After Dark. I’m not sure what made me pick up FSOG. I just remember seeing them in local grocery store and buying the first book. They were really new back then, so I donät think they even were hyped up yet.

I hope you’ll find some books that makes you like the genre too (:

    1. same, a sex scene every 5secs is fine but… please give me some other contents aswell xD

I totally snorted at “alien’s anatomy are different” hahaha- thank you for the recs! i’ll check thoses out! Honestly, I had been curious about FSOG too, at first- and then the boom came and I went “oh shit” with the bad stuff people were talking about.

  5. I have read a few smut, they’re not my favorite, but you know what, there are some that I really enjoyed. I would say it was a book for me that definitely had more than one or two explicit sex scenes and the focus of the story is the romance of the MC(s). I don’t tend to review them and I haven’t really read any in a while but they are something I just have to be in the mood to read this sort of book and I don’t really own any but the couple I do, I did like them 🙂 What I don’t like are smut books not labelled as smut and then “BOOM” you’re on public transport and wondering if everyone can tell you’re reading a very naughty scene lolol

    1. Ahahaha yeaaah that’s kind of a surprise eh 😂 it’s nice when it’s an ebook though- so nobody know what you’re even doing! So they have no idea you are reading some sexy romance eheheh 😈

But yes I totally agree! One of thoses books you gotta mood-read and not force.
