All the bright places ~ Jennifer Niven ☆ review

All the bright places ~ Jennifer Niven ☆ review

I said before that I wasn’t sure if I wanted to review this one, but upon reading it one night it was very clear how I just had to !

Like most of my reads nowadays, this book started on the more “eh, okay..” side, before I got completely swamped by it ! And look, my first #beatthebacklist I finished this year !

Here’s my review of “All the bright places” from Jennifer Niven; read in french as “tous nos jours parfaits”, published in 2015.

A book i’ve loaned to my public library after all the love I saw online for it. Let’s see if it got up to the hype for me ! 😘

My review;

4,5 /5 – I usually never give half points in my review; however, this one is special. I simply cannot make up my mind on which note I wanna give it. Giving it a re-read at some point may put into perspective things I overlooked upon first read. However, my copy was borrowed from my library – Maybe one day i’ll feel the urge to buy it for myself

✘ Although there’s some things I cannot relate to for myself (both families, Violet’s popularity, the accident ..), I can see a bit of myself in both Finch & Violet. Loving them both in their own way.

✘ Thoses stories of “They shouldn’t be with one another due to X, but due to some turns of circunstances… they do. and they will.” are my guilty pleasures.. Ohhh I love them !!

✘ This book has so many good quotes from it ❤ The one I fell for (not sure as of why, though) ;

“Because you smiled at me.”

“What?”

“You asked why I wanted to do this with you. It’s not because you were up on the ledge too, even though, okay, that’s part of it. It’s not because I feel this weird responsibility to keep an eye on you, which is also part of it. It’s because you smiled at me that day in class. A real smile, not the bullshit one I see you give everyone all the time where your eyes are doing one thing and your mouth is doing another.” (…)  – Page 101

This book … at first I wasn’t too sure of what was going on, what all the fuss was about. Then it hitted me … this is one of thoses book like “perfect chemistery” By Simone Elkeles where I wanna be 17again and love deeply, potentially a bit more idiotic as we’re so young, but both loving each other as nothing bad can happend to us. That it cannot end, basically a love i’ve never met (even now at 23).

In this world of fiction, we see how cruel our world is, how it always was and probably always has been. Specially if you’re different and targetted as “wierd” or maybe “crazy”.

Sure, i’m not to that extend, but i’ve been there .. I also felt so scared of what I could do to myself once upon a time where I was in my deepest days of anxiety and depression. It makes us feels and show us how characters are able to feels alike us aswell.. if we even been there.

**This book is an important read in my eyes; it does include the more “taboo” but important talk of mental illnesses & suicide. With the extra push at the end to note how important seeking help really is in thoses situations, it’s not our fault and we shall not be afraid or ashamed to step forward. **

  1. This is such a great review. I might have to give this book another try. I couldn’t get into it at first but I’m interested in trying it out again.
