Are book genres different in another languages?
Good morning!
For those of you who can read in more than one language; do you find that books originating in one language are better than another? Or do you have one kind of books that somehow doesn’t fit you in a language VS another?
For the longest of time i’ve read in french growing up. Now that I can pick from both french and english, there’s some things that I started to notice:
- Though I don’t recall them being labelled at such back in my days, books made in Quebec that attracts me are definately more in the YA section. Wierdest of all, adult books written in french almost always end up in DNF.
- The covers in french books looks pretty cheap most of the time.. and not remotely as nice as their english counterparts *though exceptions*
It is a given that my feed is 95% english, for a very few percentages of added blogs in french to help me find some nice books in my language.. but I find easier to get a nice book, regardless or age-range or genres in english — However, I realize that I hardly ever am able to find something that will content me in french. Even when im browsing my shelves at my local bookstore! Which used to be my prefered method back in the days.
I pick up a book with a title or cover that attracts me.. and it just “meh” upon reading the back. Most times, because the written french is too “standard” or “higher class” for me in a way, and there’s just… way too many words that I don’t feel like reading 😅 (for every 1-2words in english, french translates it to like 6..). They also tend to have longer dragging introductions, most probably by the same phenomenon, and that snaps me out of it.
Out of my reading preferences, i’d say maybe thrillers are less bad. Adult romances are most often than not turned into drama.. I recently picked up « Ces petits rien nous animent », which from the synopsis was three strangers being linked together by a teen attempting suicide- all 3 seeing her and avoided her jump, she made them promise to stay until they find her mother.
Something that looked nice when I picked it up, turned into something that feels dragging: one that just found her husband cheating, one needing to choose between his love & family, and the last one worrying why his brother cancelled on him. Not only does it feels like unnecessary drama, but theres way to many POVs for me- following four MCs.
Have you even stumbled upon something of the like- what do you think?
