Is it wierd to not have a favorite author?

As a book blogger, we discover and consume a LOT of books during our lifetime- most especially as we’re “active” in the book community: we hear about different themes, authors and books that we might’ve not had discovered by our own means.

Just like whenever someone asks me for my favorite color, I don’t seem to have one name in particular.. I do love a plethora of different ones, but not ONE that is distinct of the others. It also seems to be changing depending on my mood or circumstances.

When in High School, I would swear by Guillaume Musso. I actually found him by browsing our school library, and I read all of the novels that they hold. I was obsessed by his works, as of which a part of me still binge-buy any new novel that I cross from him that I don’t own/haven’t read; although to be completely honest, I forgot most of what I read back then.

Unfortunately growing up to be anxious/depressed, that had it’s toll on my ability to concentrate and get my imagination going; aswell as my memory. In that “phase” that lasted a year or two, I couldn’t finish ONE book – dragging them for months on end. Starting multiple ones to drop them halfway as I couldn’t remember what in hell was happening in them. Musso sadly got hit too, « L’instant présent » had been one of thoses books that I’ve started but shoved back on my shelves months after without finishing, promising to *hopefully* pick it up again.

Since i’ve gotten better with the help of the community & this blog, I’ve picked up one of his, « La fille de Brooklyn » — which was a good read, but nothing phenomenal either.. it was a good enjoyeable ride, but idk if i’d wanna read it again.

« La vie est un roman » has been one of my recent purchase, as it got released in 2020; not knowing what I was in the mood for, I solely started that one because it was on my Summer TBR and I figured.. why not. I just finished the book 5days after starting it (though there had been two days that I didn’t picked it up). I just got instantly wrapped up inside the story, allowing me to read in daylight. in the middle of the living room as my parents were watching TV on remotely high volume. The read was quick-paced and baffled me with how it ended.

Nowadays, I do have a few newer “must-buy” authors that I got LOTS of books from; like Ruth Ware, Alice Oseman.. and newer to me authors that i’d like to expend and get more books from them.  However, I don’t really wanna use the favorite author anymore..

Do you have a favorite author?
Did it changed through the years, or remained the same?

  1. My favorite author is like my favorite color or my favorite song it depends on what kind of mood I’m in 😉 And often the season, the year the day. It’s not weird at all!

    1. Yess!! Finally someone that think alike 😅 When you first talk with people, a common thing to ask is your favorite color… and i’m here like eeh, none? but all at the same time? 🤨

  2. I mean, there are definitely authors I like, but I’m not the kind of person that’s like: OMG I WILL READ EVERYTHING THIS AUTHOR WRITES! XD I mean, anybody could end up writing something I don’t like, or don’t have any interest in reading, and that’s okay. They can write whatever they want, and it doesn’t mean they’re a bad writer or I don’t like their work anymore. I don’t think I’ll ever have an auto-buy author. And I’ve always liked the actual work more than the artist. Same with music. I can like a song, or even a few songs by someone, but I don’t know or care enough about the person to call myself a fan.

    1. That makes alot of sense actually.
I tend to like their newer stuff, and then I obsess with them and move upward and see what else they got xd Books, musics, games.. everything get the same treatment! ahah
