Jobs I didn’t knew existed prior to reading them in books / Original MC’s jobs

As my main genre that I enjoy reading is contemporaries, I do occasionnally stumble upon MCs jobs that I either didn’t knew existed, or that’s just so original to see in books! I love when authors do that, picking jobs you rarely hear about and make them more known, or even creating their own spin to it with a hint of reality.
Penetration specialists (pen testers)
Ruth Ware’s Zero Days have her main couple in that field; being hired by the companies to test how high their securities are, both physically and technologically. Jack entering buildings sneaking through security to get to their informatical center, and Gabe hacking through it to gain as much sensible informations as possible before security realizes what’s happening.
In this time and age, informatical securities is a must, especially for companies taking our banking informations! Ofcourse I knew they hired hackers sometimes, but physically entering buildings escaping securities?! Wow! While i’m not sure how true this part is, that should absolutely be a necessity!
Tree surgeons
One of our 3 females MCs from Beth O’Leary’s The No-Show climb trees for a living.. While it does make perfect senses to have people cutting branches and etc when needed, I didn’t knew this was a thing! I either thought they just cut it from the bottom, or idk, electrical companies had their technicians cutting branches if needed (like them being in power lines) 😅
Mental health crisis helpline answerer
When I read Hannah Sunderland’s At first sight back in 2020, I instantly loved how that’s our MCs job! Hopefully we’re aware of the helplines available to us, but rarely do we think about them and the people behind that.
Shopping channel presentator
Just like the previous one, Ellen Meister’s Love sold separately showcased a job that ofcourse I knew it existed.. Doesn’t we all ever stumbled on that shopping channel atleast once? But I didn’t knew anything about what it consisted of or anything 😝 So I found it pretty out there and unique!

I’ve heard about penetration specialists (odd name considering the connotation behind that lol), but I honestly haven’t read it in a book or know anyone who does it (usually I hear about it along the lines of white hat hackers hacking into a system to test out the security).

yes rofl love the name .. from my research, I could only find the hacking part of it as being real.
