Let’s talk Bookish ➙ Are reading goals worth it?

Good morning guys!

Happy 2024, It has been a hot minute since we partaked in a Let’s talk bookish! Today we have the January 12th prompt, about bookish goals; Did you set reading goals for 2024? Have you set reading goals in past years? Do they motivate you to read more, or do they make reading more stressful? What kinds of goals, if any, are the most motivating to you?

Let’s Talk Bookish is a bookish meme that was created by Rukky @ Eternity books where each Friday, bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week! Since the beginning of April, the meme has been taken over by Aria @ Book Nook Bits; She also created the pretty new graphics!

First and foremost, before joining the blogging community, I NEVER did reading goals.. We all know that when I started I was in such a bad shape mentally that I could hardly ever finish books anymore. Let alone imagining things in my head as I was reading- I really feared losing that hobby of mine.. which I hold so dearly as my godmother had been a part of it.

My goodreads had been founded same time as my joining the blogosphere- crazy to think it had been so long ago now!! And I did failed reading that first goal of 10books, coming only halfway.

And look at that, slowly making progress!! I’m so proud 😭 From merely 5 books in 2017, I went to suceeding all reading goals, except last year: 23 books in 2018 (12 goal), 28 books in 2019 (15 goal), 25 books in 2020 (20 goal), 30 books in 2021 (20 goal), 38 books in 2022 (30 goal). Just last year I’ve failed at 37 of 40.. which is just THREE books off- and we know it was because of the TOTK release that ate at my reading time.

Within 7 years, I’ve gone from barely achieving 10 books, reading only 5 in a whole year to reading 37-38!! ❤️

As you can see, I find it helped me greatly in the past years. Although I don’t feel able to join in community challenges quite yet, except from Audiobook challenge & Beat the Backlist, that are pretty easy without prompt or anything. I’ll set myself little goals, without too much pressure, like reading outside my comfort genres last year; pushing me to consciously reach out.

This years’ goals have a lot more however; Retrying for my failed 40 books read, I also wanna reread 4books, get 2 audiobooks, a third of french books aswell as more nonfiction. Let’s see how that pan out, while nonfiction and reread might not cause problem, the 13s of french books & audiobook might 😅

What are your thoughts on reading goals, do you find them helpful or stressful?

  1. I agree. I think bookish goals can be helpful for even something as simple as reading a little bit every day. It can also remind you of why you like reading so much and get you excited to read again. I don’t have any specific reading goals this year, aside from reading 2 books a month, reading more diverse books and getting back on the books I own. But the other day as I was creating a list of books that I had backlisted and wanted to read again I found myself getting excited!

    1. Yes that’s good!!
Ive found myself to be quite unhappy with my progress thus far.. one DNF, one finished and slacking to finish out of character 😅😅 but I need to remind myself we’re not even done January yet!! There’s 11 other months to do better
