Let’s talk bookish ➙ Books as gifts?

Good morning, Everyone!

Let’s Talk Bookish is a bookish meme that was created by Rukky @ Eternity books where each Friday, bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week! Since the beginning of April, the meme has been taken over by Aria @ Book Nook Bits; She also created the pretty new graphics!

❀ December 9: Books as Gifts (Hannah @ Hannah’s Library)

Prompts: Do books make good gifts? Do you ever give or receive books as gifts? Would you rather receive a book from your wish list or be surprised? What would you do if you didn’t like the book you were given? Would you expect someone to read a book you got them right away?

For me, it depends first and foremost if you know the person well or not; it you think you know enough about their book taste that you’ll pick something they’ll enjoy, go ahead! If not however.. i’d stick to a bookstore gift card.

It had happened that I received books as gifts for my birthday before- but I had gave them precisely which books I had wanted: Eliza & her monster when I was with my ex, the finale of Le journal d’Aurélie Laflamme for my parents.. It happened only once that my coworker gave me a book for my “leaving workplace” gift- a book that sounded really good, but I actually haven’t read it yet, so I can’t say if that was a good choice or not 😅

I honestly prefer 100% with them going with a list I’d gave, like the instances above, or just go with giving me money to buy whichever books I want with it. If I’d happen not to like the book given at all, I’d maybe try it out of good heart, but if I really don’t like it I would have to donate it — giving it the benefit of the doubt of “maybe the book is better than it sounds”, but if it’s a genre I relatively don’t like at all… I would just ditch it.

Personally I only gave one book as a gift before, to a relatively non-reader, but I gave her a non-fiction kinda humorous book about horror movies; because it made me think of her as she’s had always been a fan of horror movies ever since we were kids. She just got her baby so I didn’t got any feedback on it yet, not having much free time as expected, ahah.

Ofcourse no expectation as of time limits; Imean either the reader you give it too is a mood reader or they had already plans of what they wanted to read. Or in this case life just being hectic in general. I don’t think it’s fair to expect them to read it right away.. Even when we are really hyped for books we’ve been dying to read, we tend to make them wait longer on our shelf soo.. 😅
