Let’s talk bookish ➙ Character or Plot focused books?

Good morning, Everyone!

Let’s Talk Bookish is a bookish meme that was created by Rukky @ Eternity books where each Friday, bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week! Since the beginning of April, the meme has been taken over by Aria @ Book Nook Bits; She also created the pretty new graphics!

❀  September 9; Character or Plot Focused Books? (Brooke @ The Reader’s Game)
Prompts: What makes a book more character focused? What makes one more plot focused? Which do you prefer? Do you have any recommendations for plot focused and character focused books?

A book being plot focused is mainly the story running it’s course, without really showing much character developement. In my head, that’d be something like <Nothing but blackened teeth> ; Though the writing got lost on me a little, we didn’t got much character’s focus anywhere. They go to a haunted house for a wedding, the ghost took their friend’s away, they gotta do what they gotta do to get her back, end.

While something more character focused, it might be in first POV or it might not, but you get more information inside the character’s head, how they feels.. and so much more focus on their character’s developement, which ideally change throughout the book. It’s be more like <Love songs for sceptics>, where her emotions actually get through the story to not be that linear.. because of something she did based off anger, it might take a few detours to finally get to the finish line; much like what’d happen in real life.

I’m definately more of a character focused reader.. Which might be what gives me such problems trying to find a good horror book – as I do feel that they’re more plot based, or those that i’ve tried anyway.

While the story is important, I much more prefer being in the MC’s shoes. To feel their emotions and really get inside their head. I want to get my heart broken by what’s happening to them, and feel that hapiness surge when they get what they needed or desperately wished for.

What about you; are you more of a plot or character focused reader?

    1. Same!
Like yes okay we need a start, middle, end of a story but eh.. i need details.

  1. I think it really depends on the writing for me. I love plot-focused books, but if the characters are not properly developed or fleshed-out I will definitely lose interest. And as for character-focused books, well those characters really need to shine off the pages for me to enjoy it, and I feel like very few writers are actually able to pull that off.

Lately I finished The Gilded Wolves by Roshani Chokshi and I felt like it was a perfect balance of both. You get an epic, ambitious plot and a whole cast of amazing, adorable and painfully relatable characters too!

    1. I agree that a mix of both is just perfect! I don’t typically look at the writing but it does make sense.

  2. I’m definitely a character-focused reader; I don’t necessarily need to relate to them per say, but I want to know their motivations by getting inside their head and see what’s driving them toward their actions while also feeling their emotions. But I also love a really good plot-based book sometimes as well, especially if it’s both! I do think that even if the pacing is slow for me, though, I personally don’t care as long as the character development is there.

    1. Yes a mix of both is always the best! Although- slow start is rather boring me out, specifically in instance of thrillers for exemple.

Get me 👏🏼 inside 👏🏼 their minds 👏🏼👏🏼 absolute best!
