Meaningless destruction – Shannan Mitchener ☆ Poetry book review

** Disclaimer: I did received a copy of this book from the author for review purpose. This has in no way, shape or form affected my opinion on it **

This is my first time reading and reviewing poetry, so please excuse myself if it’s a bit chaotic right now; i’m deeply sorry !

This is a debut poetry book surrounding the theme of mental illnesses, so when I got asked if I could read and review it, I had to accept ! I’m always looking for more reads surrounding that theme so I can relate, and plus I was curious of poetry books for a while; so it was just perfect !

Goodread’s page

My review;

4 / 5 = I liked it ; enjoyed the poems, and may reach to reread some of my favorites again – when however maybe not the whole book

Trigger warning; some poems have imagery of self-hurt, abuse, rape and abortion.

My favorites poems were; The Siren, Brown eyes, When did you fall in love with him?, Supernova, Raw, Careless, Full circle, Moving on, Hesitate, Endless, An old friend

Although i’m not used to reading poetry, I love how relatable and heartfelt thoses poems were; even if somes do speak of heavier things, it remains so real and a “lighter” feels than reading another kind of book, per exemple.

I’m a lover of metaphores, which I appreciate them mixed with mental illness related way to live. I read it in one setting, rereading a few of her poems more than once. I related to a few of them, while others not so much, but with the imagery she put into her poems; I think maybe it could help outsiders of mental illnesses/self harm/abortion to see things a little clearer, atleast i’d hope so.

  1. Well it happened to me some weeks ago: reviewing a friend’s poetry book when I don’t read poetry..usually. But I really loved them!

    1. yes ! I should probably get more of thoses .. I was just clueless on HOW to do my review xD I think it ended up not so badly !

  2. I really enjoy reading poetry. There is usually so much emotion thrown into such few words that make me enjoy it a lot. It’s great that you really enjoyed this one. Great review!
