Microdermal piercings; My experience/story

Microdermal piercings; My experience/story

Good morning,

Frankly, I’ve been wanting to wait until it was all healed up before doing this post since I got it remade.. but since it’s not what happened I shall post it now, regardless.

Disclaimer; I am of course not a medical expert nor piercer, I am simply sharing with you my experience and story. Make your own research or ask your piercer if you have any questions regarding this.

First, what’s a microdermal?

A microdermal is a kind of what we call “surface piercing”. It is said to be less lasting than “regular” piercings would; some may be able to have it for years, while some may only keep it for months/weeks. So like anything, it really depends on your body and placement.

How is it done?

It’s a more extreme kind of piercing, if you ask me. The piercer start by using a medical “hole-punch” to first do a hole in your skin, then they will create a little pouch inside for the jewel to rest. In a T form, the little “legs” that goes in your skin have little holes in them so your skin grow into them. Which will grip it and will be what’s keeping it there.

Experience No.1 (2018) ;

What pushed me to get it done was this piercer in town having a promotion giving all piercings a % off as he was serving my area for X numbers of years. Having watched a youtuber that had a dermal beside her eye and always loved it, I decided to take the plunge! Sadly for me, he didn’t had it in stock and was waiting for his delivery. With my luck, he had to extend the offer for me as his delivery just didn’t came for that “weekend promotion”.

Finally, it arrived on Valentine’s day. At this point, I was eager to have it and absolutely wanted it NOW (which is generally a BAD IDEA). What he put me was smaller than what you would’ve had normally, but that was all he had so that’s what he put me — the left one in the picture above.

The installation lasted maybe 5mins tops. He made sure it was where I wanted, whole punched it, and shoved it inside. It was really more painful that anything I had done before, and I like to think my pain tolerance is high (but then again, each person’s different). He didn’t placed anything on it and said to make sure it didn’t got swallowed as it healed and clean it 3x per day with saline.

I did as I was told, like anything I was super meticular about it. It wasn’t particularly swollen or red, but sometime i’d “puff” and some white liquid would come out. But as I had read it’s quite a moody piercing that will become red and puffy with how you feel and such, I wasn’t too too bothered. I was absolutrely LOVING how it looked and started taking more picture of myself, as I was so much more happy with my face.

However, Just before Christmas one of the little “leggies” came out. Of course I was really sad about potentially removing it but alas.. you just can’t have it half-in. While one leg just didn’t took, the other one was NOT. MOVING. it was highly cemented within my skin, which made the process even more difficult for me emotionally.

Experience No.2 (2019) ;

As when I had went to do it the first time when my sinuses were swollen with allergies (because again, I didn’t wanted to wait) and with one side gripping while the other didn’t- I just thought I would try to re-do it once last time, but more to the left of my face; where it gripped.

I waited from December to April before re-doing it; although it wasn’t in the same placement, as mom was keen on letting it heal a good while before then. As the previous piercer had left my town for another parlour, I got another one to do it – a girl this time. I ended up having my appointment to have it redone on “good friday”.

This time, the installation took way more time; maybe 30mins (and way more painful than I remembered). She was SO much more professional than the other guy was; she was taking her time, explaining me what she was doing on every step.. needing to dig a little further as she explained not everybody need the same dept as we have different faces, etc. She also agreed with mom that the last placement was too close to my eye and personally wouldn’t had done it there, so she was happy to place it more down-left of the last scar. Afterward she also took the time to massage around of the gem and really made sure the bleeding had stopped. She also told me to have a bandage on it for atleast three days; as it’s in an area where the muscles moves alot it could help while she also said it wouldn’t necessarely “do it or break it”.

While I listened to her tip, I didn’t took into consideration that just like mom, I’m having an allergic reaction to the tape of bandages .. so I ended up with a huge rash-like wing on the left side of my face xD As with the other one, I did the same care as I was told; though it was said to do it 4-6weeks on the care sheet I was given, I ended doing it for almost 8weeks; and way more than 3x a day.

I don’t quite remember in all details how my first one was, but this one seemed to be puffy and leaked the white stuff more often. As much as I’ve tried, it never really was completely clear of any redness – though of course I had LOT of seasonal allergies, so I just put it off on that.

And then it just happened, one morning I was cleaning the surrounding and one leg just popped off.. I didn’t knew how to react at this point, and I just gently pulled on it and the whole thing just came out. It had been two months at this point, so while it wasn’t entirely a reject per say my skin just didn’t gripped on it at all. On the jewel’s longer leg, there was some black crust on it, so I don’t know if my skin tried but something happened (maybe I moved it or something) and it died out? I don’t know.

I tried to pop it back in in hopes that it would grip it but no.. the next morning it still offered no resistance so I took it off, fearing a possible infection and well – if it didn’t took in two months and still not trying … guess it wasn’t worth the risk, eh.

As much as I really wanted it to work as I loved it dearly.. My skin was just not wanting it no matter what. I would’ve think the second time would’ve work better than that, as the piercer I got was way more trustful and profesionnal than the first one did – but you cannot go against the body’s will.

I’m writing this on the morning I lost my second one (June 13th), I don’t know if it may help anyone to consider my experiences before doing it or whatever, sharing my story with the curious.. but I just really wanted to share them and have them written for rememberance on my part.

  1. Oh man it sucks you’ve lost two microdermal piercings already 🙁 I wanted one myself a while back, but after googling peoples experiences I decided to just pierce a bunch of other places :’) I’m not sure if they can be pierced in your face, but an alternative to microdermals are surface piercings. Granted, you would have two stones instead of one, and you might not want it, but I think you have less chance of your piercing being rejected (but they might also used a scalpel to cut open the skin and place the piercing better so.. yeah idk if you want that..)

    1. ahaha yep. this is the kind of thing that once you see how they’re done you just turn around like NOPE! (I may be a little sadic on the sides.. 😂 ) — they can actually ! I’ve seen some while googling for rejects and stuff. However.. not sure i’d wanna tempt it as not counting thoses two, I’ve had three “normal” piercings – which only my nose held up. (considering I pierced it twice-the hole is there to last xD) My belly button didn’t worked either – but that’s probably my fault as I got a job with LOTS of lifting and the way I lift is by dragging the thing over my belly .. Ithink it’s mainly a thing with my body at this point.

  2. I hadn’t heard of these before, and there’s no way I’d ever be brave enough. They do look pretty awesome though!

    1. ahaha yep xD I understand you !
      That’s what pained me the most.. it did look really good and I loved my “new face” with it SO MUCH!! but after two times… I guess that’s a no from my body :\

  3. I have always had trouble with piercings, they take so much longer to heal or they just don’t, or they close up if I look at them wrong. I took my nose piercing out once for 12 hours…to give birth lolol and it closed up, took it out for like two hours after going to the ER, closed up. But I was determined and so I’ve had my nose pierced three times and I don’t plan on getting into anymore hospital situations ahaha. I did pierce my belly twice but each time it rejected it and popped it out in the end, so now I’m stuck with an odd scar there, I’m sorry yours popped out, but I think it did look really cute and think of all the selfies you can look back on!

    1. Yeah, atleast I have the selfies !!
      Oh my 🤦🏽‍♀️ yeah- even when they’re like « you need to remove it » im like nope. Kinda funny to see my nose piercing on xrays 😂😂 ahaha

    1. Hahah yeap… I had lots of people at work asking me how it even stayed there 😂 mom was also paranoïng of an infection moving to my eye.. i just 🤷🏽‍♀️ erh.
