My first experience with Audiobooks !

My first experience with Audiobooks !

After years of saying that I shall try an audiobook sometimes, for years (basically since I’ve started blogging!) I finally followed my words and started one !!

It took me two separate times to set my mind on one .. I’ve been wanting to rent one from my library through my libby app; but I was being overly picky on it.

First, i was feeling kinda guilty to pick something that wasn’t on my tbr.. atleast on my virtual one (gotta knock them off somehow hey! All tbr counts.. 😂) and then I was being picky with the tone and overall voice of the reader. Even with youtube videos, if the voice is just blah or irritates me, no matter how good the thing is … i’m sorry I can’t finish it..

All the samples that I had listened to seemed kinds “blah” to me .. idk why precisely, I guess the books I tried just didn’t fit the mood of what i’ve been wanting to read at that moment.

Finally, I settled on one few nights ago; Geekerella from Ashley Poston. Which will also be my first retelling, that I kept seeing on ALL THE BLOGS and promised myself I should read it eventually.. if not only because of the cute brown dachshund on the cover!

I’m not very far in it yet.. but I quite like it! I’m not too too sure of what to do while listening to it though 😂 Idk if my brain can take and imprint itself of the story while im doing other stuff.. so for now i’m just mostly laying there with my eyes closed. I’m honestly pleasantly surprised! I would’ve thought it would be harder for me due to my “lack of concentration”.. but it actually works so far!

Are you pickier on the books you pick on audio?
What are your criterias for picking books to audio-read?

  1. Audiobooks are my go to when my ADD gets the best of me, when I have a lot of driving to do, when I have big hands on projects, when I behind in ARCs and for backlist books because there isn’t a rush- so I can listen to them during the above times and when I’m laying down to go to sleep.

The narrator, for me is important, as in much as they arent horrible. Like as long as they are ok I’m good. For certain books that I know I love and will want to listen to or what some people consider rereading (like Six of Crows/Crooked Kingdom which I read traditionally but now have memorized because of the audiobook) I pray the audiobook is at least good enough for that purpose.

I was gutted when I lietened to There Will Come A Darkness. I loved that book and wanted to listen to it again after reading the ARC but the narrator was HORRIBLE. And worst, there were many points of view and he did all of them :/.

Some books I actually think are better as audiobooks like Fate of the Fallen. So it is a weird dynamic lol.

And that is my rant lol!

    1. yeah, voices means everything to me.. it’s also kinda bummer if you do ALL the povs with the same voice, as I can’t see who’s talking this can get confusing REAL FAST. I also don’t wanna fall asleep in it either due to the voice being boring or unexpressive xd

I guess it make sense, because dute to the fact that I can lack concentration, I want something nice enough that I can “zoom” and concentrate on and not on something else..

  2. I have so many issues with audiobooks. They have to be perfect for me to enjoy them! Saying that, I really enjoyed Six of Crows, The Hazelwood, A Constellation of Roses, Strange Grace, Heart of Thorns and so far Shadow of the Fox!

    1. It took me such a long time to settle on one too- atleast I can say im not the only one 😂😂

    1. Interesting!
I’m far from that problem.. ahaha😅🤦🏽‍♀️ i’m quite the slow reader on my own means.

  3. When I first started listening to audiobooks, I was pretty picky. I wasn’t sure it would work for me either since I liked seeing what I’m reading, but I’ve been listening for years now. I’ll sometimes listen if it’s a slow day at work, on road trips, while doing chores, just laying in bed, etc. I do have some favorite narrators, but overall, I can listen to almost anyone now.

    1. ohh that’s good!
right now, that’s something that I can’t do to listen at work XD even on my break as I’m sometimes needed to help out as everybody just launch themselves for a coffee as soon as I place my butt on the chair (so I gonna be all hears of what’s going on.. plus I hate stopping mid-chapter!)
