The problem when taking a hobby from someone else

The problem when taking a hobby from someone else

Good morning!

As you may know, most of my hobbies has been “given to me” by a sort of mentor in my life.. that includes reading, gaming, and even watching animes too!

That means that somehow, I’m still tied to the person who showed it to me.. even if I adapted it onto my own twist. Which is, in itself, both a good thing and a curse.

Reading;

I was introduced to reading about around the same time as gaming; though maybe gaming came a little earlier, as I couldn’t read yet (atleast not english) .. but anyway.

I started as early as one can; first with my mother or my godmother reading to me, then proceeded to start reading on my own – mainly child books, or my godmother’s comics «the adventures of Tintin». From then, I just kept on reading until I made my way onto novels and Ya/adults books with years.

Even if I vaguely remember that one time where I saw my godmother underlining specific sentences in red marker, I am still unable to write in my books/dog ears/anything like that.. because she taught me to not damage books in any way. DNFing is also quite hard on me, as that was something that I originally wasn’t “trained for”; I don’t even know if my godmother ever stopped reading something halfway through it.. Although we are all our own individuals and reading is a solo thing, it’s still very hard to distance myself from how it had been transmitted to me, you know?

Gaming;

This one came from my mom’s other sibling – my uncle and I only has a 16years difference, so he was still a teenager when he got to babysit tiny me. Which got him to make me borrow and play on his N64 with him (give a child a console and they’re quiet! Ahah).

First games that I remember playing has been Mario 64, aswell as Zelda Ocarina of time; back then, my parents were not buying me any games, so I only went with what my uncle gave me. Later, he gave me a green gameboy color aswell as lending me pokemon yellow & blue, aswell as Zelda Oracles (of time & of seasons) and Link’s Awakening. Boy how much I replayed thoses.. it was also a big thing for me to play thoses on my own, without my uncle, when all of them got re-released later on new generation’s console.

Around 10years old, I started asking my parents for games; and of course now I have my own means so I can expend and buy my own consoles and games… and yet, I remained a Nintendo girl – though I’m not much a fan of Mario anymore, The legend of Zelda & Pokemon are still big on me. Though I expended to Harvest Moon, Animal Crossing and other nintendo games on my own, I still didn’t left that franchise; all that I own are Nintendo.. except for the few titles that I have on my mac on Steam: Stardew Valley and Prison Architect been my most played.

Animes;

Of course like anyone else my age, I had been introduced to animes with Pokemon & Card Captor Sakura.. but it didn’t really “took” on me. On my senior year of high school, I tried again with Soul Eater, as I knew my ex liked it and.. well, I wanted to watch it too, but I ended up not finishing it as it gave me panic attacks.

Many years later, I went into a relationship with a guy that was a big anime fan – so I got brought onto it again. After hearing me gush about the Silvering of The Sovereign Serie by Josie Jaffrey, he first introduced me to «Seven Deadly Sins». Which had became my top one that I loved so much and always compared everything else to 😂 I saw a few episodes here and there of other ones, which were kind of “meh”, but the ones I ended up liking was: My Hero Academia, One Punch Man & Dr. Stone.

Now that i’m no longer with this person, animes has kind of been on the back bench .. I refused to watch the new season of Seven Deadly Sins as I prefer it Dubbed, as of which it’s not out yet, but also because I feel like it’s still tied to him in some way. Lucky for me though, my love for Deku & My Hero Academia was beyond that and I can manage to continue Season 4; though I went over my “cheap personality” and took a try-out of funimation’s subscription as I loved his voice actor so much in english.. 🙈 but i’m still un-sure how to grow my own watch list and not have someone just make me watch them with him..
