The woman in cabin 10 ~ Book adaptation review

Hello!

I had been so hyped ever since I saw we were getting a book adaptation AND a sequel to my much loved Woman in Cabin 10 from Ruth ware. I even reread it earlier this year to prepare.

While it launched in October, ithink? I didn’t had the chance to watch it until now, as we didn’t had netflix anymore – I was so happy we renewed our subscription last month so I could watch it!

* SPOILER BELOW *

To say I was dissapointed was an understatement.. Unfortunately, I don’t think it’s a true to self book adaptation, more of a “inspired by”.. they changed the whole story. Now you may enjoy it if you haven’t read the book, but if you had, you might feel as let down as I did. I kept pausing and saying how “this wasn’t this way” “this wasn’t in the book” – my mother found that hilarious that I was so excited and it turned out to be a total flop and not the movie I wanted at all 😐

Starting the movie, they not only removed how she got robbed in her home and locked in her bedroom with her cat but they replaced it with someone she had interviewed had gotten murdered? And also the premise onto how she got on the boat, it was now a fundraiser from Richard Bullman to give to cancer as his wife of stage 4 decided to stop her treatment?

Throughout the book, Lo’s goal was to meet Mr. Bullmer to interview him.. in the movie it was his wife who asked her to come abroad and wanted her to do an article on it. The way she met carrie was off, and the thing that infuriated me the most: they removed the affair she & Richard had, changing it to him only hiring her as an “actress” to perform as his wife to sign a change of will to give him the money instead of donating it to charity.

Leading to the ending being off- Richard wasn’t aware of Lo’s being locked in the boat, and was searching for her.. leading to Carrie leaving the door open for her to leave, leaving the fake fight between the girls/Richard having orchastred the whole thing in the original. Lo then went back to the banquet to save Carrie- when the book has it flipped.. and his death was wierd- but also brought Ben to die too??! It was also Ben who got the pictures on his camera instead of Cole.

I could’ve went into the movie better if I had known it was a different one than the book, but the whole time I kept comparing the others and going “well this make no sense…” as it erased all the bridges onto the sequel, making sure we were not getting an adaptation of it (Woman in Suite 11). While I know ofcourse changes need to be made when you put it into a movie, they removed whole plotlines! it wasn’t just details but stuff relevent to the overall story.

What did you think, have you watched it?
