Using suicide to convey a message?

Using suicide to convey a message?

We’ll be discussing the act in itself & idealization of suicide in this post. If it’s something that triggers you personally, please take care of yourself!

Heey!

This is something that bothers me quite alot – with how self-harming, cutting specifically, is my ONLY trigger that I just can’t .. and it angers me how widely suicide is used as a cliff hanger or plot point. Books, movies, TV shows.. can we stop?!

While I do understand some might be needed to push the “reality” of it and how important it is to talk about it.. yet most of them totally aren’t necessary. It is as shady as to kill a woman character to make the male one advance. (While I know it is a thing, can’t remember what it’s called..)

First, The midnight library, I do love Matt Haig and I loved the concept of the novel.. but that beginning was really harsh. There was absolutely other ways to make his character in-between life or death to access the midnight library without this piece.

I had been lucky to be in a good mental space when I read it where it just slightly made me tick, but we definately need to be aware!

Next, we recently watched the movie adaptation of A man called Ove. While I haven’t read the book, I kinda hope it’s “lighter”.. though I doubt as usually the movie is the lighter one of the two..

I do believe it rocketed to 4. Times. Within the movie of Ove’s character attempting suicide, by different means. All of which got interrupted without having time to do harm, but that was quite painful to watch! At the very least, he could’ve had made him show heavy signs of idealizations without actually going through it so many times.

While some people will tell you that life don’t come with warnings and yada yada.. I do think we could atleast trigger warn those things!! How is it acceptable that it gets through virtually everything??

Many of my shows made in Quebec also seems to be abusing it, and for what? Mainly cliff hangers.. while there’s so many other way you can kill characters, why pick this one?! If needs be, atleast don’t show it on screen & keep it to idealization, like come on.

Not only do I find it bad writing and absolutely a cheap way of continuing the story, but I find it really bad for viewers’ mental health. You just can’t escape it, what is it giving to the younger generations who might be watching? What about people who might be on the verge of it already- I was there once.. the finale of a show completely THREW ME OFF, I felt it on me.. I had to fight the thoughts so hard.

I truly despite how media nowadays is full of sex, violence and useless suicide scene. It’s wildly overused and seems to have lost it’s meaning.. surely there’s better way of bringing awareness.

Are you as bothered as I am about it?
What’s your thoughts about it being used in plot points & cliff hangers?

  1. 100% agree with this. I would also add that I absolutely HATE it when the threat of r*pe or the act of r*pe is used to continue a story, or worse, used as a tool for character development or whatever cause that’s just not the way to go about it. I wish we could have more discussions about how media and literature handles sensitive issues like these when telling stories to people.

    1. Yes you’re right!
It’s seem both are in equal measures in every thing I watch! Just give me some fluffy cartoon or something.. I dont want that
