What scares you in fiction ?

Hello, Hello !!

Here we are for yet again another Bookending Autumn post; but this time, with a conversation post of my own 🙂

Last year, We talked about the horror genre in general — but this year, I felt like going more in dept in that and ask y’all what scares you the most in fiction?

Of course, if you’re like me and don’t read horror books/haven’t found one that works for you yet, the question still applies to the other medias aswell!

Horror is a genre that can impact everyone differently, and just like the fantasy genre, it’s build up from many “elements”.

💀 Monsters?
Wether it’s from seeing (or NOT seeing them) or the in-dept description of them.

💀 Jumpscares? (other medias than novels)
Although I quite like them in horror movies, this is something I just CANNOT do in horror games xd having me pause every minutes because my heart beats faster? yeeah, nope.

💀 Psychological ones?
Where it’s not really showed or mentioned, but the ones that works through your head and make you doubt everything.

💀 Conspiraties?
If written well, the fact that it could *possibly* happen in real life; wether currently or in a near future.

💀 Paranormal/Ghosts?
I’m one to believe and actually really like this one! But I know some might be scared of them or perhaps the idea of them being real.

Anything else i’ve forgotten?
Feel free to tell me which ones scares you with as much or little details as you want xx

  1. Oh man. “Psychological” stuff scares the crap out of me because they’re just so possible!! At least with the other stuff you can tell yourself meh, who’s this going to happen to? But with the things that mess with your mind you’re just left reeling because omg this absolutely normal protagonist (someone like me) just went through a wringer simply because of the mind. OMG OMG OMG.

    1. I can definately see what you means !! The mind is really a powerful thing.. especially when it goes « wrong ».. what can you trust if you can’t trust your mind?

      1. RIGHT???? It’s like the famous saying about home that I can’t find. But it goes along the lines of “the world is a stranger to someone whose home is no longer their home”. I’m misquoting like a pro, but the point is if my mind that should make sense of everything and help me does the opposite where will I go?

  2. Fiction in books is so much different for me than games or tv. It’s so easy for me to leave a book for a while or think something through, which kind of means that I’m not scared of anything in books I think? Except for bad writing of course..

    1. mmhmm – I can sorta relate with that? I tried a few horror books and so far none really .. worked for me thus far.

  3. Definitely agree with you on the jumpscares!! I love them in movies, but can’t stand them in video games.
I love it when they give vague descriptions about the monsters so you can half imagine how they look but still maintain the creepy factor.
I think like 90% of my horror movies involve paranormal/ghosts 😆

    1. yes, the imagination and the “wait for it!” factor works great indeed.
yep same ahahah ! The Conjuring world is honestly my favorite.

  4. Ohh, I love horror movies! I started watching them when I was 8/9 (my dad didn’t really care for age restrictions) and back then I loved Blair Witch Project!! But noped out after watching The Shining at 10 and after that enforced the age restrictions myself 😀
Buuut now I love them again. I enjoy the psychological ones the most! So deliciously creepy. Unfortunately, my Dad ruined it for me to watch those movies with other people because he once tried to scare me but my friend who was there with us got scared way more and after that told everyone to never watch those movies with me 😅🙈
I haven’t really read much horror books though … maybe I should start?

    1. Aw man, that sucks ! haha ..though I can get the temptation xd I was the person being laughed at when I was younger ahaha- I just couldn’t watched them.
Maybe we should get to read more horror books … hopefully we’d find something that we enjoy !
