Being a grinch on Christmas

Being a grinch on Christmas

For the last month, or even as early as straight after Halloween ended, we’ve been seeing Christmas cheers everywhere. More than the majority of us have been Jolly in the Christmas atmosphere all around us; within those who do celebrate it.

Don’t get me wrong, I do have happy early memories of Christmas when I still had a family.. but I have grown to be a cynical lady 😬 I’m not particularly fond of anything Christmas; songs, movies.. nothing. I’ve just recently been caving into Christmas novels, to be frank, ofcourse the ones including a Grinch character (like me!) being favorites that I wanna read soon-ish.

Even though mother try to love Christmas, with dad and me being the two grinches of our household, having a Christmas tree up & few decorations and everything.. This day doesn’t particularly means anything to me. It’s like this thing were everybody seems to have a lovely time an “other’s thing”, the only meaning being it leading to my birthday.

For years, it meant me and my father working, up to the 24th around supper time- as usually everything closes around 4 or 5pm. We have a supper between the three of us, either a turkey or a ham (The other one being kept for Christmas day) and then we play games to try to distract mother until midnight to finally open the gifts. We always picks up Wii bowling, and we might also dig into my Collection of Monopoly games. Drinks and music is also included.

Then midnight comes, we open the gifts and we go to bed. and that’s all, really.. On Christmas day we have our other “feast”, and try to dress cleanly to take Christmas Family pictures. That’s the end of it for us.

Gifts aren’t the problem

All my life, my family hasn’t been the wealthiest. Just barely managing through paychecks; this year being the rare one where we have money.. However, whenever asked what I want for Christmas & my birthday, nothing comes. I rarely spend my money, so I have the means to buy everything I want long before Christmas rolls around. Which I usually very much do.

Whenever I tell people when my birthday is, everyone always turns exctatics: “It must be SO nice to have TWO rolls of gifts at the same time!” they say. But it’s not as fun as they think it is; I actually don’t want anything. I have everything already. What they fail to think, it’s that it’s also quite a burden, in all actuality. When people aren’t working because it’s boxing day, the other half of a time it’s a big snowstorm. Furthemore, it being Christmas and all that, friends and family are usually away because they’re at their families for the holidays .. leaving me alone. So in the end, I don’t actually celebrate either Christmas OR my birthday- because what can you do? 😬

Happy Holidays, for all of you who do celebrate it.
All my love, and might you have fun xx

  1. i don’t celebrate christmas. growing up, my parents couldn’t afford anything expensive so it never got associated with gift giving. currently, my parents tend to work (they get paid time and a half, and a day in lieu) and we just have a family dinner whenever everyone’s free (which usually isn’t on christmas as that’s the busiest time lol). i always sound like a grinch to my coworkers, but i don’t see anything special in the occasion, and i don’t like decorating.
i do enjoy the paid time off from work though! 😂

    1. Right? I usually work too 🤣 well the day before as we’re closing (for the only time) on Christmas day.

I don’t see anything wrong with not favorizing gifts though- as long as you see your family and enjoy yourselves, thats all that matters! Xx
