Hommage to Grisette; Getting a new cat after the passing of a loved one

Hello everyone,

Getting a new pet after the passing of another one is hard, and the passing of time sadly doesn’t make it easier.. It had been nearly a decade since my old kitty passed when I got Majora; and I was still upset over her passing. Would I had been able to cover the cost of fixing her ear myself, she might’ve been able to stay a few more years with us- but alas I was unemployed, and it was putting danger for my mother’s new kidney.

The kicker in the story is that I never really expressed a need for another cat before- I was absolutely fine with my two dogs (which felt different because our last family dog was biting me and I had Kafei at the same time as him). I had been wanting a Calico or tortleshell, or maybe a British short hair or a Siamese… but Nope. I ended up with another plain Black & White kitten 😅

When he came around as a foster where I worked, he just looked SO MUCH like her.. I just had to have him. For the first few months I had trouble seeing him- mother would send me pictures she took while I was working and I would just see her first glance. Uncanny how they looks the same- minus a few spots on the nose & under the chin- even my elder thinks it’s the same cat!

Majora is my first cat that i’m responsible of- so there had been a curve of learning how to properly take care of a cat. Especially how he needs a ratio of wet food daily as males are more prone to urinary issues, which was less common when I had my female. It had also been almost 10yrs since we had a cat in the house, so I gotta admit I had forgotten a few things or things changed within the years.

Several things I’m also doing different, like bringning him to the vet atleast every 3yrs for the basic vaccines, and whenever he might need it, opposed to just once to fix him. He’s also a fully indoor cat, while she had been an outside/inside cat. He shall only get out on a leash, and while we are present.

The other obvious is that although he does look alot like her, they’re different cats.. his personality is different. Again, my memories got erased by the passing of time or the fact that I was a child, so I don’t fully remember her personality. There’s some overlapping however;

– Like her, he has choosen me. He barely go to the other members of the family; he stick with myself most of the time.

– He comes when I call him. Shortened to “Ma” or “MaMa”, whenever I call his name he comes to me. I’d also tell him to come to the bedroom to read or nap, and he comes with. He also come greeting me to the door when I come home from work

– Being 2 years old next month, he’s growing to be a cuddly cat! ofcourse mostly to me, but he’s also nice to visitors and go check them out for pats.
