Good morning !
So I am finally trying my hand at Charvi’s new meme, Off Tangent Thoughts (OTT). This prompt was May 4th’s — You can see our lovely host’s post right here.
Thoughts You Have About Book Reviews or Discussions
(When you have to write a review, while reading a book review, reading reviews for a specific book, reading discussions on themes of a book etc)
As we all know I write book reviews as I go in the book, I decided to go straight for while im writing discussions posts !
Here we go;
- *type, type type .. super inspired by said topic*
- eeeeerhh.. does this sentence makes sense?? Is this even english ??
- *take a print screen at what I was saying, send to Alex on discord*
- *Waiting for his answer … usually that yeah, he understands..*
- Oh, okay. sure.
- *continues to type my thoughts*
- Erhhh … RHA HOW IS THIS WORD IN ENGLISH D:
- *has a blank … vagly gestures with my hands as I think*
- *Mom asking me if i’m searching for my words again, try to help*
- *Of course cannot help .. Making a growl sound and trying to find it on my translator on my phone*
- … WELL, fuck it, that’ll do – they’d understand.
- *finishes posts*
- Now how do I end this post ? 🤔
- *think of questions about topic…*
- *write all the questions I can think of*
- aaaand- DONE!!
So this is how it usually goes when writing a discussion post when you aren’t english ahaha
Do we have similar thoughts? What are some of yours ?
I would like to do more discussion posts. I’ve thought about a few of them recently. Especially with hearing people complain about the use of authentic vernacular in We Hunt the Flame and Candle and the Flame. It really angers me. I don’t know how you expect authors to right culturally authentic pieces, in English, without using language that is authentic to their culture. And people are complain about God forbid utilizing the glossary and how it took them out of the story. No. That should bring you INTO the story, the world. That is the point. But if I was to sit and write a discussion piece on just *that* it would scare the hell out of me. I don’t know if it is my place and the YA community can be so toxic right now that I am scared of any misstep causing a backlash. I’m not sure if this is really what you are getting at but it is my concern around discussion pieces right now.
Oh, I actually haven’t heard of that one, though I haven’t read thoses books either.
You seem to have lots to say on that topic, which i’d say just go for it and explain your thoughts — with a little disclaimer that you are not of said culture or whatever it might be that makes you say it might not be your place.
What we need to remember is that a conversation post is meant to be a conversation, not a monologue, so the tone must remain respectful and allow the readers to interact with some questions or something… so they can tell you if they share your opinion or if no because […]
Haha great insight to how you write your discussion posts. I would love to do more discussions post but I don’t think people are that interested in what I have to say. I only do discussion posts when I am taking part in a weekly meme and there’s a certain question to answer.. Great post!
Awww, i’m sure people would be interrested! Most of the time, if you feel like speaking about it, someone would wanna listen!
I have to admit I also blank on words a lot but English is my first language, so it must be so annoying for you to probably have the right word in your first language but not know the translation of it!
Love that you’re joining in on the OTT posts!
Yep.. that always happens 😂 the reverse is also true though.. always a blank on the target language!
I once forgot the word for « groundhog ».. and tried to have Alex giving me the word by describing it by « small beaver » ahahaha what a laugh.. he ended up giving me my word anyway somehow 😂
I sometimes have to search for words, too – and when I need to do that, sometimes, the specific word I want won’t come to me in any of the languages I speak! It’s SO frustrating.
I think that even if there was something in a post that not everybody could understand, your discussion post would still be good, Kristina!
aww thank you!
yep – either you forgot it entirely, or you know it in your OTHER language and not the one you want it in xD
Discussion posts are so much fun to read, so I’m glad you write them!! And I can only imagine how hard it would be to be bilingual so you’re aaamazing!
Ahh thank you so much ❤️
I totally agree! Both fun to read and write!
