Where it all started .. 💝

Where it all started .. 💝

** picture taken of me by my mom, in a local park around July.

Hello everyone !

I know I did an introduction already, but I didn’t really went over where and how I started being a reader – as of which I gush about alot (or used to!) on my booklr over on tumblr.

Soo.. for me, it has been there for as long as I can remember, although it was much stronger then .. apart of the part I talked about in my introduction, when I was around maybe 5 up to 7years old, my local library had thoses “summer activities” going on and my mom always signed me in for it. Basically, at the start they asked the kids how many books they wanted to read within the summer, gave us a little pamphlet thing for us to write which one we did read, and then we would come to the library every day from 8 to 5pm (so basically like school) where we would do activities and play and if time remained after, we would read a bit. At that time, I would always go above and beyond my goal everytime ! I think I recall them being impressed, haha, aswell as I have a folder of pictures and a pretty bookmark they gave us at the end of the summers.

Later, from 6th to 7th grade (??), I was in the “library comitee”. A little group of schoolers where we would go to the school’s library at lunch time and arrange the books and put them back on after being checked and put at the bottom of the “racks”. I recall absolutely loving it ! and again, I got two really pretty bookmarks (still my faves to this day) – one for each year- which one of them our library lady wrote me a little note as it was her last time with us at this school…

** “Books makes you travel” – as you can see it has been well loved ! On the other side, she wrote “June 2006, Thank you Kristina and happy holidays ! “

Then, when I arrived in high school, since my family had moved town and I knew nobody except my cousin (who had her friends.. that we didn’t reeally got along), I passed the first two years being that wierdo who was passing her lunch time reading at either the library or the middle of the hallway near my locker. I remember one guy within my year stopping and being like … what are you doing ?? 😂😂and for all of that 4years, I was almost always brigning a book with me to class (that I owned or borrowed from said library) and after tests, as I would always finish them early and “oh no you can’t leave class…” I would get out my book and quietly read for the rest of that class. This is when my love for “love virtually” from Daniel Glattauer started !  I remember reading it in french class after a test and being that kid who get to the teacher with the book like “can you tell me what this word means?” during the same period of time, and maybe the two years afterward when I was in college for accounting, my godmother’s ex-husband was working near where we live now, so she would come over to our house for a week at the time – and we had a little “reading party” I guess you could call .. we would install ourselves on my bed or the visitor’s bed and we would read our books together, although not reading the same things, we would sometimes make a stop and converse of our book with eachother (what happened, what it is about, a funny moment… etc)

Then that leaves us to the last thing I remember ..  Which is not an happy one .. after all I went through my brain had enough; and I lost a bit of my ability to read as much and as quickly as I used to. I began to focus more on videogames as an escape to anxiety and depression and sometimes books are too “vague” in a way my brain cannot interpret it properly anymore ? I have more difficulties getting my imagination running and really *GET* inside of the book where you lose any form of the reality around you… which I end up stopping and DNF’ing as it’s not fun for me anymore .. I wanna get inside!!

I don’t want my love for reading to just stop there ! In no way, shape or form will I let it go, that love has been given to me by my godmother and my mother ..and that’s precious for me! Which is why you would see me saying my brain is in “training” hah – I know I probably cannot have all that back, but I want to atleast try to have it better. I know some genre I better just not touch as my brain ain’t developped enough yet, and I am easily falling into slumps lately … which really don’t help .. and yeah, sometimes I will feel completely out of this book community – and really saddening with how it evolved. Cheers to next year in hope I can manage to have more will to read and get to finish MOrE of them !

I wanna know .. When and why did you started reading ?
Do you have some good memories of it like what I just told you ?
Additionnally; If you are also in the same boat as me, did you found a way to make your reading go smoother ?
any tips you could give me ?

  1. Like you, my love for books started in the library. I love your library experiences. They sound like a lot of fun. For me, it was a bit different. My aunt is a librarian and when my parents went to work she was also my nanny which means she took me with her to the library daily. I basically grew up around books.

But now I am dealing with, not necessarily a reading slump, just adult life getting in the way of me reading. I usually make a goal page on busy days – like read at least 15 pages today, and on my days off from work and other activities, I set aside an hour or two just for me, a book and a nice cup of tea.

If you discover any other tips and ways to read more, do share them! 🙂

    1. Oohhh I would had loved that ! In reality it really started a bit before in my godmother’s house & in my bedroom (reading me to sleep) but that ain’t fun ! haha

That’s a nice tip, although on my day off I got lot of headaches lately .. which makes it impossible .. 😐 Of course ! If I find any more that works on me, I shall make a post about it ! 😘

  3. For me it’s also been as long as I can remember! 🙂 mom really tried to get me started on books. She read me stories too. Probably why I loved it. Started reading at 4.

Library comittee? What is that? :O wow… I don’t think we ever had that! But I did volunteer at my school library when I was 17 🙂 they only had me doing paperwork, but hey, it’s the library.

Actually, I also finished everything early, but I didn’t bring books. I used to draw my own manga 😀 it was fun…

Reading party :DDD that sounds awesome! I’ve never heard about that 🙂

I had also stopped reading at one point. That was in university, I guess I was just too busy. But then I started reading again 🙂 and here I am blogging right now… So I’m sure you’ll beat your slump. I think you’ll be better now because if you’re hanging out with us, you will just constantly be talked to about books xD we’ll rub off on you 😀

    1. I was so early, I started reading before anyone else ! hahah, also was trying my best to write “attached” like grown ups before going in 1st grade 😂

Also I might not have used the right word .. like y’know in school you usually have thoses “groups” you can sign on like drama class, improvisation, etc .. usually it’s after school aswell … well that one was at my primary school – there wasn’t one in my high school I went to (Nope, no middle school for me .. our city was too small pfet xD)

hehe, hopefully you’ll all rub off on me ! Now I only need to read in english Or invest in audiobooks to follow up ! 😆

  5. I don’t really remember when I started to read or falling in love with books, but my parents used to read me before bedtime and everytime they got something wrong I made them re-start. I was a cruel child 😂

For a period of my life I took a long pause of years from reading, but I don’t think that there was some kind of specific reason. I just stopped. Even now, sometimes, I get lost doing something else and I easily don’t read…. falling behind my tbr in a really embarassing way.

        1. Oh noo! Luckily only thing I play on there is sims.. but mine also has a water dammage so heh – usable but my keyboard is a prick

  7. This is such a cute idea for a post! I love that you were reading at such a young age, and having reading parties sounds like something I would enjoy even now 😀 I have always been reading – I have an older sister who reads like crazy, my parents always read to/with me, and I had the most incredibly primary school librarian who always encouraged me to read more.

    1. Hehe thank you! 😄 I would still enjoy them, but we don’t see her as often now soo .. :/

Ahh that’s awesome ❤️ I love to hear other’s experience on reading!

  9. I don’t remember exactly when I started reading but I read my first ‘book’, Oliver Twist when I was 7 or 8 years old. There was no stopping me then. I love this post. I might even do a post myself on this.

P.S I am the only one that reads in my family.

    1. Ah please do ! Id be curious to see the whole story 💕

I « used to be » aswell, mom only decided she loves reading in 2012 so before it was just me and my godmother !

      1. My dad still thinks I waste my time reading books. So I have no company yet.

        1. Oh no, That’s a shame ! My dad isn’t a fan of books, but never referained from buying me some growing up- as he said it’s better than anything else it could be. (i forgot the exact thing he said atm… but yeh. Something like that)

  11. Such a lovely post.

For me my family always read to me, I’d make them read every word on every page (so yes even the first page that has all the publishing information n them) from a very young age. It wasnt long till I could read myself

I think my reading for enjoyment dropped off a bit at school because we had to do those “reading books” but cause everyone started on the same easy one and I was already reading ahead of my year I never bothered and would get into trouble until one teacher finally recognised why I wasn’t progressing.

then i remmeber first year of high school i picked up twilight and the darren shan saga and that was me back in w my regular reading!

    1. Ooooh I’m happy you got it back !! Yeah, in high school I was reading like 2-3books at the same time hahah one mandatory for french, one mandatory for english (when I did read it .. thats another story) AND one i would read for myself. And I remembered everything !! Shame I can’t even remember the start of a book when im about halfway through sometimes.. 😥
