Good morning!
I’m a native french speaker, and as I prefer to read in French aswell as having found some french bloggers to follow, it happens that I see books translated that i’m used to see in their english counterpart.. and every. time. it just feels wierd to me 😅
Some are only a change in wording to be translated in French while the cover remains unchanged.. while some do get a revamp of the cover entirely. For this time, I’m gonna focus on books that i’ve read or books that i’ve been wanting to read.
♢ Beach Read [GR]
For this one I actually do like the french cover better.. Though the wording choosed it not “really” a direct translation that ticks me off- though ofcourse Iknow it’s not always possible.
♢ The Midnight Library [GR / My review]
The french translation actually just dropped; a year after me reading it.. so i’m kinda pissed – though i’m not one to collect multiple covers of the same book, i’m tempted to get the french copy & read it to compare my understanding VS the content of the book.
♢ The Flatshare [GR]
This one makes me SO mad 🥲 Instead of going with one word like “Échangé” or something- they did this “Night for me, day for you” .. WHY?! I do like the fake stickers in the cover though, as it portrait an actual part of the book where they only converse via post-its.
♢ The Hating Game [GR]
There’s so many pretty english covers for this one.. and meanwhile we got this 😒 So plain and bleh, I absolutely hate how french covers seem to get less love put into them sometimes?
♢ My heart and other black holes [GR / My review]
Out of all the 5 that I picked today, none of them actually kept the original cover 😅 While they actually tweaked it a bit, it looks close enough.
What do you think?
Do you find some French covers prettier than others?
C’est tellement bizarre de voir ces titres traduits! I prefer reading in English as I think the translation always loses something.
Jsais! Une coupelle sont pas si pire, mais dautre.. 💀
Mh, yes. I alternate between the two- just because sometimes french is easier on my poor brain 😅 and I hadn’t gotten any luck for Quebec books so far (except for Anna Caritas!)
I like the French except for The Flatshare. I don’t particularly like either of those covers to be honest!
I’d agree, that one is a particularly odd one.. im shared between hating or liking it xd
I actually like most of these French covers–it’s always interesting how different editions of the same book are released for different regions. Recently I saw the German cover for Six Crimson Cranes by Elizabeth Lim and I absolutely fell in love! Too bad I cannot read German lol.
Ahaha right? Some covers do be prettier in another language- i’m just pissed that english gets so many pretty versions, but french is usually stuck with a « meh » one 🤣 the marketing company don’t seems to bother sometimes
Oooh this was such an interesting read! I see a lot of the American cover versions of books but I rarely see the covers of any of language. I read The Flat Share and whilst I didn’t really enjoy it, the French title is terrible in comparison! Like you though, I like the sticky-notes on the cover though x
Yes, unless you seek languages in particular, they’re pretty hidden ahah
They did terrible with that one, idk what they were thinking 😬
I’ve gotta say, I think I prefer that cover of The Flat Share!
It’s definately a unique one! The only thing that bothers me is how they formulated the title..
