Let’s talk Bookish ➙ Do tropes counts as spoilers?
Heey!
Today we have the March 22nd prompt, about tropes; A lot of the time, books will be promoted on social media books with their tropes. For example, a book might be advertised as being enemies to lovers, having found family, or starring a ‘chosen one’. Can those tropes be spoilers, giving away parts of the plot? What do you think about marketing books based on tropes?
Let’s Talk Bookish is a bookish meme that was created by Rukky @ Eternity books where each Friday, bloggers write posts discussing the topic of the week! Since the beginning of April, the meme has been taken over by Aria @ Book Nook Bits; She also created the pretty new graphics!
I gotta say i’m pretty insensitive to spoilers to begin with; however, something that I love to know beforehand before getting into a book is either a trigger, a time travel warning as I have some difficulties with that when it’s not clearly indicated, and tropes.
Again I am fortunate enough to not really have tropes that I truly despise except for underage “student love teacher” type of tropes, aswell as those “taboo romance” where they’re siblings. I do know however that for alot of readers love triangles or insta love is a absolute No-go.. So I definately feel like picking a book with this trope without knowing it would result in a overall bad experience. Not only for the reader, but a maybe unecessary bad review for the book aswell – as if it would’ve been clearly noted beforehand they wouldn’t had pick it up to begin with, so they wouldn’t had to review it badly.
Being a mood reader myself, It also feels like a good idea to clearly indicate the tropes we are using in a book- as sometimes I do be craving for a specific book with a specific tropes (sometimes I even mood read for languages and prefer one over the other – so hey! anything goes with mood reading), so that way it would be so much more easier to pick a book to fit our mood. Iknow Storygraph classifies the books by moods, and we do have a trigger list available.. but I don’t have knowledge of something like that for tropes? which I’d definately love!
I don’t see tropes being any different than disclosing what subjects the book can be including; for exemple speaking of mental health, suicide, abusive relationships, etc. I think it’s never a bad idea to include as many informations about the book as we can, so readers can go into it with full knowledge. And as long as we don’t know the specifics of “when”, “how”, “why”.. I don’t see how it spoils anything – Sure, we know it arrives eventually, but we don’t know when and the surrounding.
What do you think? Is tropes a spoiler or not?
