Why I decided to blog in english (Fr/Eng)

Why I decided to blog in english (Fr/Eng)

Bonjour!
Hello !

For thoses who knows me already, i’m born french. It’s my primary language and the one that I mostly use in my day-to-day life, a good 90% — with my loved ones, when speaking aswell as when watching movies. So why did I choosed to write my blog purely in english?

I’d say that the answer is in two parts; the first one being that it’s a bit harder for me to write in good standard french where most people would understand me. I am in fact Canadian, with a spoken language mixed of Quebec french with some old french & some “Chiac” (typically half-french half-english). That being said, if I were to write like I normally would.. well I don’t think many would actually understand me 🤣. The act of forcing myself to write in standard french just don’t feel like me; it’s easier to me to just write in english directly.. which is what it present itself as most times.

The second reason is simply because it’s a good exercice to upgrade my english! I have quite some difficulties with my verbs, their conjugation aswell as a few words that I don’t know. I am also tend to write my english as I would my french, which is not always accurate. I would say that only about 10% of my everyday life is in english; mainly at work & on the inthernet (my blog, youtube, etc).

I always continued to read in french, though only been able to read in english a good year after I’ve started blogging. Being within the english bloggers’ circle, not being able to read some books like they could kinda played on my imposter syndrome. 3years later, it is now much more easier for me to read in my second language (although we aren’t there yet for the fantasy genre); The books that i’d recently found in my mother tongue were quite dissapointing, it wasn’t the good ones that i’d remember loving.

It was then that I decided to give myself the challenge of reading half french & half english again for 2022; as it’s without saying that reading in french is so much more easier on my brain! To help me find better novels, I then searched for more french bloggers to give me some recs!

Do you read in more than one language?
What about blogging, which language is easier for you to write in?

  1. I read in both Dutch and English, but blogging I do in English. I switched back to Dutch for a while, but I felt like screaming into the void a lot.

    1. Yes that’s the main problem.. english seems so much bigger – and much easier to find. I went on a search to find some french book bloggers but I only found a handful. Many of them being over on blogspot and not wordpress..

  2. This is so interesting to me. I only know a bit of high-school level French, enough for me to get the gist of something I read or get me by when on holiday. I enjoyed reading the French and English in your post to see if I was getting it right. I’m so impressed by people who are multi-lingual. It is an amazing skill.

    1. Thank you for your imput!
I have just scheduled a mini review post containing two french books; so you’ll be able to experience it again ☺️ I’ve always been on the fence about writing in french over here, so that’s comforting to read!

  3. Finnish is my mother language but I prefer to blog and read in English. There are few books I read in Finnish but they’re usually books I already own or books I found in library. If I blogged in my mother language my best friend would be the only one who rarely read it since I know of about one or two Finnish bloggers but I’m not friends with either of them.

    1. Aw that’s kinda sad.. as im trying to find more french bloggers, I find they seem to be on a complete other platform than english ones 🙃 and more scattered around.. while english seems to be EVERYWHERE. I found a few on wordpress, but most uses blogspot or wix and that really bugs me xp i don’t like their comment sections..
